തിഥി എന്നാൽ എന്ത്?

A tithi is a lunar day in the Hindu panchang: the time it takes for the angle between the Moon and the Sun to grow by 12°. Unlike a solar day of about 24 hours, a tithi lasts roughly 19 to 26 hours and can begin at any hour of the day or night.

A lunar month has 30 tithis: 15 in Shukla paksha (the waxing, bright fortnight) and 15 in Krishna paksha (the waning, dark fortnight). The first fourteen names repeat in both fortnights; the fifteenth is Purnima (full moon) in Shukla paksha and Amavasya (new moon) in Krishna paksha — 16 names in all.

The tithi current at local sunrise is the tithi of the day. A tithi that begins after one sunrise and ends before the next never holds a sunrise and is skipped (kshaya); one that spans two sunrises is counted twice (vriddhi). Both shift festival dates and muhurats.

What is tithi today?

Today's tithi is shown at the top of this page with its end time, calculated for your selected city from the Moon–Sun angle at local sunrise.

What is a tithi in the Hindu calendar?

A tithi is a lunar day — the time it takes for the Moon–Sun angular distance to grow by 12 degrees. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month: 15 in Shukla paksha (waxing) and 15 in Krishna paksha (waning).

How many tithis are there?

There are 30 tithis: Pratipada to Chaturdashi (1–14) and Purnima in Shukla paksha, and Pratipada to Chaturdashi (16–29) and Amavasya (30) in Krishna paksha — 16 distinct names.

Which tithi is good for starting new work?

The Nanda, Bhadra, Jaya and Purna tithis are generally favoured, especially in Shukla paksha. The three Rikta ("empty") tithis — Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi — are traditionally avoided for new ventures, and many almanacs also avoid Ashtami and Amavasya.

What is the difference between Shukla and Krishna paksha?

Shukla paksha is the waxing fortnight from new moon to full moon; Krishna paksha is the waning fortnight from full moon to new moon. Shukla paksha tithis are generally preferred for auspicious activities.

Why do tithi timings vary by city?

The Moon–Sun angle, and so the moment a tithi begins and ends, is the same everywhere. What changes is local sunrise: the tithi of the day is the one current at sunrise in your city, so two places can occasionally have different tithis on the same date.
