Aavani Avittam

The annual renewal day for the sacred thread (yajnopavita) among Brahmins, observed in the Tamil month Aavani (Aug–Sep). Yajurvedis observe it on the Shravan full moon; Rig- and Samavedis have their own Upakarma days. The day also begins the six-month cycle of Vedic study.
